P. S. du Pont was president of E.I. du Pont de Nemours & Co. from 1915 to 1919 and chairman of the board from 1919 to 1940. He was also president of General Motors (1920-1923) and chairman (1920-1929), as well as a member of many other major corporate boards. Irénée du Pont (1876-1963) was born at Nemours, near Eleutherian Mills, New Castle County, Delaware. He received B.S. and M.S. degrees in chemical engineering from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. He began work for E.I. du Pont de Nemours & Co. in 1903 in the Construction Division of the Black Powder Operating Department.
